When my son was in Grade 6, we started a little project together at our kitchen table.
It began with a simple question:
What if kids could decide how the story ends?
So we started writing a choose-your-own-adventure story.
The main character was a curious little owl named Emerald, who loved playing hopscotch in the meadow.
But one day, Emerald’s favourite ball rolls away…
Right into the forest.
Now the adventure begins.
Should Emerald follow it into the dark woods?
Should she ask her family for help?
Or will she meet a slightly mischievous leprechaun named Stumpy along the way?
Every reader gets to make the choices, which means every adventure can unfold a little differently.
Now that my son is about to graduate high school, it makes me smile that the tiny story we started back then is finally out in the world.
And if you have a young reader who loves adventure, animals, and making their own choices, Emerald might become one of their new favourite characters.
